Below are some of the recent CMM events this year
Lessons from the Movement
January 13, 2008 at 7 PM
On the Sunday before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Pilgrim Congregational Church will host a commemorative service entitled Lessons from the Movement. Robert Bellinger, Marjory German and Steve Van Evera will share their personal experiences with the civil rights movement and how these events continue to shape their lives. Members and friends of the Lexington community are invited to share their experiences as well. The need for social justice is not historical. Together we can continue the work to move our community towards the dream that is yet to be fulfilled. Justin Newry and the Levitical Singers will perform several songs including the unofficial Negro National Anthem Lift Every Voice and Sing.
The public is welcome to this event. A reception will follow.
Pilgrim
Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, is located north of
Lexington Center at 55 Coolidge Avenue.
Meet the Authors Event
The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew – Three Women in Search of Understanding
Tuesday, January 15, 4 p.m.
Brandeis University, Shapiro Campus Center Multipurpose Room, 2nd floor 415 South Street, Waltham, MA
Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, Priscilla Warner have co-authored a wonderful book about their experience as three women involved in interfaith dialogue and the friendships that developed as a result. As Muslim, Jewish and Christian mothers raising their children in the New York City area after 9/11 they felt inspired to reach out to one another and to build bridges of understanding across their faiths. The book tells the story of their interfaith journey, including all the struggles they encountered on the way. Honest and heart-felt, the book shows that it takes courage, perseverance and humor to successfully engage in interfaith dialogue in a post-9/11 world, but that it is well worth the effort. Join us for this exceptional opportunity to meet the authors and discuss the book with them.
Prince Among Slaves: The True Story of Ibrihima Abdul Rahman
Reception and Film Screening, presented by Muslim American Society Boston
January 20, 4- 6:15 p.m.
Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA
Winner of the Best Documentary in the 2007 Black American Film, Prince Among Slaves tells the true story of an African prince who persevered through American slavery through the power of faith. Through this hardship, Prince Ibrahima Abdul Rahman emerged as a leader and hero who won over the hearts of all who encountered him, including the President of the United States at the time, John Quincy Adams.
Presented by the Muslim American Society, and co-sponsored by CMM, this event will offer a remarkable opportunity to learn more about our common history and see a story that will have meaning for all of us. It is a chance to look honestly at the past, to celebrate the triumph of faith, hope and courage over oppression and violence, and to re-commit ourselves to working together for justice in our world today.
There will
be a reception from 4- 5 p.m., followed by the screening at
5:15 p.m. The film is 90 minutes. CMM invites interested
members and friends to RSVP for this event, by contacting
the CMM office at (617) 244-3650.

“The Homeless Child in School”
A public forum by the Concord Advocacy Network to End Family Homelessness and CMM
Sunday, January 27 7:00 – 8:45 PM
Trinitarian Congregational Church, Concord, MA
96,000 children in Massachusetts have no permanent home, according to a July 2007 report by the Massachusetts Department of Education. They live doubled-up with friends or relatives, in temporary family shelters, awaiting foster care, and sometimes on their own with no sibling, parent, or guardian. You can do something about it!
The Advocacy Network to End Family Homelessness will hold its fourth annual forum, The Homeless Child in School, on Sunday, January 27th at the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord, from 7:00-8:45 PM. This forum will focus on how being homeless severely compromises a youngster’s ability to obtain a good education, and what is being done about it. This year’s forum will feature Robyn Frost, Executive Director of the Mass. Coalition for the Homeless, Mary William, Program Director of the Homeless Student Initiative for the Boston Public Schools; and Laurie Burnett, Homelessness Education Coordinator for the Framingham Public Schools. The forum moderator will be Miriam Stein, MSW, advocacy trainer and family homelessness consultant to Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries. The forum is free and open to all.

Interfaith Film Screening of James Carroll’s Constantine’s Sword & Discussion with Author
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 7:00 PM
Boston University, Morse Auditorium 602 Commonwealth Avenue Boston, MA
Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM), in collaboration with ten co-sponsoring organizations, will present a private screening of James Carroll’s Constantine’s Sword, a new documentary film directed by Oren Jacoby. Author and Boston Globe columnist James Carroll, who co-produced the film, will be present to answer questions following the screening.
The film will be shown at the Morse Auditorium at Boston University. Parking is available at the Granby Lot on the corner of Granby and Commonwealth Ave. for a fee of $8.00. Street parking is also available.
Based on the book by the same name, Constantine’s Sword examines the roots of religious violence and its relationship to the long history of Christian anti-semitism. The film also examines the contemporary context of religiously enflamed violence and dangerous new stresses among Christians, Jews, and Muslims. This private screening of Constantine’s Sword will provide the audience the opportunity to view and discuss the film in an interfaith setting, during the Christian season of Lent, and in advance of its general release in local theaters in April.
This event is being co-sponsored by the American Jewish Committee Greater Boston Chapter, Boston Theological Institute, Brandeis University Interfaith Chaplaincy and BUILD Fellows Program, Hebrew College, Jewish Community Relations Committee, Marsh Chapel at Boston University, Massachusetts Board of Rabbis, the Massachusetts Council of Churches, the Paulist Center, and the RUAH Spirituality Institute.
For more information, contact Polly Hamlen, Program Manager, by phone at (617) 244-3650, or by email at phamlen@coopmet.org. Please respond on the Reply to CMM below if you plan to attend and the number of people attending.
